Panama City History
|
Many of the local waterways and natural landmarks were named by Spanish explorers from the past. This fact is holds true for most of Florida. The conquistadors made a practice of naming the different landmarks after catholic saints and explorers. St. Andrew's Bay, which is at the center of the county is named after St. Andrew due to the fact that it was discovered on the day that the Catholic calendar designated to the patron.
Until the purchase of the land by the United States in 1819, it was known as no mans land.
